Do Cats Go to Heaven?

Last Updated on March 22, 2020

When someone loses their beloved cat, it is common to think of them going to Heaven. It is peaceful reassurance we often tell ourselves to make the pain lessen. While there is no proof on this one way or the other be it scientific or Holy, is it possible for cats to go to Heaven at all?

Soul vs Spirit

Cats have the basic senses that most living creatures have; Sense of smell, touch, sound, taste, and sight. The biggest difference from us and cats is that we have a soul and a spirit, where cats only have souls. The difference between the soul and the spirit is conflicting emotions. The soul governs emotions, both good and bad. The spirit, on the other hand, is the head seat and governs the soul and the body. With a cat, because they only have a soul, they base emotions solely on natural, God-given instincts. They are able to form relationships, become happy, jealous, and so on. Since we have spirits, we have the conflict inside us to choose what is right and what is wrong based outside of instincts or common laws of creation. We have the laws and morals of God in our hearts and learn on higher levels of authority, where cats (and other animals) only use only their soul.

The Soul is the Mind

In essence, the soul is merely the mind. Since the spirit of each man/woman is the highest authority of a being, that is what continues to live on after physical death. The soul, or mind, is the distinctive emotion behind the spirit, it can be changed upon experience, hinder growth and learning, and can be manipulated and tricked based on experiences both past and present. The spirit is the true living individual in the body. It is what gives us the ability to choose freely for ourselves. Cats on the other hand, only work and choose what they do based on instincts in their mind.

Animals Don’t Face Damnation

So based on the Holy Bible, cats and other animals cannot be sent to hell or heaven because that is where the spirit goes. That is not to say their soul does not live on. The mind of each cat distinguishes them from each other. It allows various personalities and unique characteristics. Because God is love and love is God, the purest and highest form, He knows what is in our hearts. We must remember there will be a new physical life, we will have new bodies, and a whole new (refurbished and holy) world to live on after heaven. This is where God’s true love I feel will make it possible for us to reunite with our lost cats and other animals again.

In short, no, cats do not go to heaven but that doesn’t mean God will not allow their soul to live on in New Jerusalem. The Bible never states that they are gone forever, nor does it say they don’t have a special heaven for themselves. Love makes all things possible, and God is love after all.

  1. I just lost my cat Precious yesterday at 8:55AM, was was born April 15, 2003. I just wanted to know if she went to heaven? She was a loving cat. I had no problem with her at all. Very polite whenever she was hungry and I would be busy doing something she would wait patiently, She would get on my lap and lay their and give me her paw letting me know I can wait. She gave me so much love and attention, When my husband and I went grocery shopping she would wait for us to come back and look out the window. She only connected to my husband, my granddaughter and my grandsons. We got her under neath our shed so she was very timid and would hide if anyone came over, just my grandsons and my granddaughter she would come to and me and my husband. Other than that is all she came to. When it was time for bed she would sleep with me and if I went from room to room she would follow and wait patiently. I miss her so so so much.

That is why I wonder if she went to heaven. God loves everyone even though my cat only had a soul and not a spirit I believe she went to heaven. Because she had lots of love given to me. I had two other cats that had pasted they were Midnight and Nova
and dogs, named Duke, Sheba. Ariel and Zelda who were all excellent and well behaved dogs but very protective to my grand kids They all showed lots of love and each of these dogs and cats were stray cats and dogs . We raised them when they were little
babies. So I hope they all went to heaven causes God is a loving God.

Anyhow Precious died in my arms. I didn’t want to put her asleep, but I didn’t want her to endure pain. I just could let go, finally yesterday morning I told Precious I can’t deal with seeing you in pain, so please I give you permission to leave me. I will always have you in my heart. I love you so Precious. I step out for a minute and when I came back from the restroom she had died. I guess she didn’t want me to see her go. She held on for two days. Precious I will see you and my other cats and dogs some when I pass where ever that may be.

    • I believe God told me my cats went to Heaven through a song, therefore I believe your cat will be there as well. What a beautiful thing it will be to see our precious babies once again. May God bless you. “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
      And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
      And give you peace.” ’

  2. Its a good thing we can decide for ourselves as to whether they go to heaven…A heaven. Our puney minds can’t possibly know the mind of God, with God’s infinate love and understanding and the fact that God made “all creatures, great and small,” knows their hearts and minds…I can’t imagine that they wouldnt be allowed, WELCOMED into heaven especially with the beauty and companionship they offer to us, in exchange for a little food and love. I will lose my beloved Sweety in a few days and it devastates me…he has brought me love and understanding all through his 13 years of owning me…especially when I lost my middle son, Michael. He comforted me days on end, and I will be there to hold him as he goes to greet the great Queen Bastet and reside with her and all the other wonderful little “catley” residing in that beautiful world she presides over in beauty and grace. I was there to watch his birth and have loved him every day of his kitty life. I only hope he loves me half as much as I love him. He will have the company of many purrrrfect and loved little souls who have come and gone before him…he will be in wonderful company.
    I love you, Sweety,
    Your human mama

  4. Clarification: By “none of this is in the Koran” I meant the stories about Muhammed’s cat or anything specifically about cats.
The idea that cats (and all animals) have souls like people, live their lives in perfect accordance with God’s will (and so go to heaven) — that is in the Koran.
But the other things — such as mistreating a cat being a sin serious enough to send someone to hell — are still part of what a Muslim’s believes.
It’s a religious matter more than anything and makes no difference to the question here. No Muslim would think it’s OK to abuse animals nor would they consider them somehow holy or evil. They are, as the Koran says, “nations like you.” And they are.

  5. In Islam, all animals go to heaven. That’s because they aren’t considered capable of sin and everything they do is in accordance with God’s will. For that, they are rewarded with paradise at the end of their lives.
Cats are especially beloved by many Muslims partly because the prophet Muhammed had a pet cat he loved named Muezza (I think I got that right. It’s close). There are lots of stories about this cat, some of them are very touching. There are also _hadiths_ that feature cats, a famous one concerns a lady who was outwardly very pious but goes to hell when she died because she neglected and mistreated her cat. I should say none of this is in the Koran, so a fondness for cats is not a requirement for Muslims although treating animals humanely and with respect definitely is.
So, at least in the religion of Islam, your cat has a soul like you do and, when it dies, goes to heaven. If you lead a good life, believe in God and do good deeds, according to Islam, you will go to heaven, too.

  6. Romans 8:11
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

God’s spirit gives/breathes life unto EVERY LIVING mortal body to which God created. Yes, Animals go to Heaven!

  7. *Goodness, this article is nonsense! OF COURSE THEY GO TO HEAVEN… THEY DO HAVE A SOUL… THEY ARE SPIRIT IN FLESH! JUST AS THEY HAVE FEELINGS SUCH AS LOVE, WHICH THEY SHOW. SHAME ON THE PERSON WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE! THERE ARE TESTIMONIES OF PEOPLE WHO SAW THEIR PETS IN HEAVEN, YOUTUBE IT. GOD CARES ABOUT ANIMALS, HE CARES ABOUT HIS CREATION & HE CARES ABOUT WHAT WE CARE ABOUT! IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED ADAM & THE ANIMALS WHICH HE LET ADAM NAME. ADAM & THE ANIMALS SPOKE TO ONE ANOTHER. THAT JUST GOES TO SHOW US HOW IMPORTANT THE ANIMALS ARE – BELOVED COMPANIONS. WE DID NOT EAT MEAT UNTIL AFTER THE FALL OF MAN… HENCE THE KNOWLEDGE OF evil. GOD IS GOOD & HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER. OF COURSE HIS BELOVED ANIMALS WILL GO TO HEAVEN.

    • Tanya, God is a loving God and as stated in the bible, he wants his children to be happy. He made it possible for us to form a very strong bond with our pets that make us happy and because of these two reasons, I believe that our pets will be waiting for us when it is our turn to go home. I hope this helps, if even a little and trust in the Lord and lean on him during the times of weakness.

  9. Cats and other animals DO go to Heaven. I have spiritual gifts and I have had visions of passed loved ones who have dogs, cats, etc there with them. I saw a vision of a close friend’s dad, he loved to fish on the Earth, he was in a boat fishing in Heaven, while my friend’s dog who passed over, was running and playing in the water nearby him. They have souls, they are pure, blessed and loved as all of us are.

    • Thanks for your comment Evelyn. According to the Holy Bible (KJV) there is nothing that states this is the case. Heaven isn’t where eternal life begins, New Jerusalem is. In heaven, we do not even have physical bodies. As for “ghosts”, the ones we see of animals are “familiar spirits”. They are not our actual pets but take on the likeness of them to interact with us. They do the same with people who have passed on. Only angels and demons can come and go from one realm to another.

      • WRONG. My deceased and extremely special cat @ 24 years beside me constantly has given me “signs” that he lives on; he loved dogs and our horses. How can you write that a cat is incapable of having a soul, based simply on the Bible which has been re-written hundreds of times?

He showed up when I thought of him, licked tears from my eyes, greeted stanger with much attention, and insisted upon sleeping with, and paying sweet attention to me. “Tigger” was extraordinary. He had a very loving personality.
He was an indoor boy who was euthanized in our home by a very caring service.

No, cats DO have a soul. You are wrong.

      • Thanks for your comment Heather. This post is based on what is taught in the Holy Bible in regards to animals, spirits, etc. If you don’t believe in the Bible, stating this is wrong is irrelevant because there are clearly two different beliefs here. It is also stated very clearly in the article that cats have souls so I am not sure where that argument is coming from at the end of your statement. I am however sorry for your loss. I know how hard it can be having lost a close friend of my own this past summer.

      • That’s what I love about religious nutters like you. You interpret the bible in whatever way you see fit, without any scruples or compassion. You know – pretty much the exact opposite of what Jesus was on about. It’s mostly the atheists who can step outside the bullshit and call you out on your behaviour.

Where-ever you’re going after this life, I’m pretty sure you personally won’t be meeting any cats.

      • Feel free to quote the Bible where it says animals go to heaven. Once you’ve given up trying and realize it’s not there, perhaps wonder again who interprets the Bible however they see fit.

      • Not everyone needs a Bible to know the gifts of God…the animals we love and who love us back are such treasures.

      • Gee Jack, you seem like a nice person.

Name calling doesn’t look good on anyone. Not even atheists who like to school others on what the Bible says.

Since you’re an atheist, I’m not even sure why you’ve decided to troll this thread at all. Just to poke fun at people maybe? Nice.

      • Just because he can and loves showing his ignorance to the entire world…a sad little person whose only pleasure in life is trying to stomp on other peoples emotions and proving just how much of a failure as a person he is…

      • Agreed! We ALL believe as we will, as we CHOOSE to…it all comes down to choices of what we believe in and I CHOOSE to believe EVERY special cat in my LONG life plays in Queen Bastet’s garden…healthy, happy and waiting for me…

      • Im new to this site but I really want to commend you for trying to share Biblical truth!! I admire and respect that and it’s refreshing to see!! I too am a Christian and a Cat Lady!!! 🙏🐱🐱

      • I have to face that in a few days and its just killing my heart…but I know Sweety will be waiting for me along with the many others whom I’ve loved as much as I could love a human…I know they will be waiting for me, happy, healthy and eager for a good petting and combing from me!

      • Purrfect Love, you stated “[…] As for “ghosts”, the ones we see of animals are “familiar spirits”. They are not our actual pets but take on the likeness of them to interact with us”.

Can you quote the section of the KJV bible where it says that? Or are you just making stuff up as you go along?

      • Wow. He was so hardline I thought for sure he would have been referring to at least something in the bible that can be interpreted to support what he wrote.
